Rony becomes highest wicket-taker in a BPL season

Abu Haider Rony, the young pace gun of Comilla Victorians, is perhaps the most-talked player in the third season of the BRB Cables Bangladesh Premier League (BRB). The 19-year-old is hitting the headlines almost everyday and yesterday was no exception when he captured four for 19 in the first qualifier against Rangpur Riders to steer his side to the final.
Yesterday’s four-for not only earned him a mere motor-bike but also helped him to clutch another great record to his name. With yesterday’s four-wicket haul, his wicket tally rose up to 21 in 11 matches and thus he has become the highest wicket-taker of BPL in a single season.
The record was previously held by Alfanso Thomas, who took 20 wickets in 12 matches in the second season of the tournament. The South African played for the Dhaka Gladiators that season. On the other hand, Elias Sunny (Dhaka Gladiators) and Mohammad Sami (Duronto Rajshahi) were the joint highest-wicket takers of the first season, playing 12 and 11 matches respectively.
Rony has already left behind all of them and as he has still one more match to play which is the final of the tournament, he can take his tally to even greater heights. In the meantime, Rangpur Riders’ Shakib Al Hasan and Thisara Perera have so far taken 17 wickets this season and if Rangpur win today’s second qualifier against Barisal Bulls, that means Shakib and Perera in all will be able to feature in two more matches. So they too have the chance to topple Rony.
