Samson shocked seeing Chennai spinners turn the ball

After suffering second defeat out of three matches in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021, Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson said he was shocked seeing the turns gained by Chennai Super Kings spinners from the wicket, which caused his side a middle-order collapse.

Chasing a 189-run target set by Chennai, Rajasthan were off to a good start, thanks to Jos Buttler’s 49 off 35 balls, with 5 fours and 2 sixes. Even at one point, they were 87 for two after 11 overs and looked well set for a competitive finish of the match.

However, once Buttler was bowled by Ravindra Jadeja, Rajasthan suffered a middle-order batting collapse, and in spite of some late contribution from Rahul Tewatia (20 off 15) and Jaydev Unadkat (24 off 17), they could never make a comeback to the competition.

“We never expected that (turn), the dew didn’t come and the ball was still turning, so it was a bit shocking to see,” Samson said at post-match presentation ceremony.

Samson rued losing too many wickets in the middle overs, having admitted that the target should have been within their reach. He also added that Chennai had managed 10-15 extra runs towards the end of their innings.

“I thought it was a good score to chase down but we lost too many wickets in the middle overs. Our bowlers bowled really well, they batted too deep. 10-15 runs extra we gave down the line.

“It’s very important to maintain a good composure, this format demands us to score at a higher risk rate; hence, it’s very normal to get out often,” he added.

Samson also heaped praise on Chetan Sakariya, who continued his glorious run of form in the tournament, picking up three for 36 in his four overs against Chennai.

“He’s (Chetan Sakariya) been doing really well, we lost the match but there are a lot of positives.”
