Shakib spins Bangladesh to big victory
Chasing 273 on a slowish pitch, Zimbabwe makeshift opener Jongwe gave a good account of himself, scoring a brisk 39. Shakib was ruthless at the other end, picking up 2 wickets, before Jongwe fell to Al Amin Hossain, the latter being very impressive on his international comeback.
Shakib picked up the prized wicket of Williams, bowling him straight through the gate. Skipper Mashrafe Mortaza took over, taking two wickets in an extremely tight and accurate spell.
Chigumbura threatened briefly, but Shakib picked up two more wickets in his last two overs, ending up with enviable figures of 5/47. Nasir Hossain picked up the ninth wicket with the score on 128, and with Mutumbami injured, the match was over at that instant.
Earlier brilliant hundred by Mushfiqur Rahim, supported by a brisk Sabbir Rahman, took Bangladesh to a fighting total against Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to bowl first in the first match of the PRAN UP three-match ODI series between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka.
Tamim and Liton opened for Bangladesh, and the latter was first to go, dismissed for a duck. He played a loose drive outside off, slicing it to point. Tamim stayed calm but played a few good shots as well, including a six straight down the ground. Riyad, though was dismissed for 9 off a Panyangara in swinger. Mushfiqur looked comfortable on a slowish pitch, starting with a couple of cracking drives. The stand began to rebuild for the tigers at a steady rate.
Tamim hit his second six off Williams, a well connected slog sweep. Both batsmen kept the scoreboard ticking and brought up the fifty partnership. However, Tamim had a rush of blood and played a lofted shot to the hands of long on, being dismissed for 40. Shakib hit two boundaries but he was soon stumped for 16. However, Mushfiq brought up his 50 at the other end.
Sabbir was scratchy to start his innings. But gradually both of the players seemed to gain in confidence. Sabbir tonked a golf swing over long on, while Mushfiq slog swept one over midwicket. But they took plenty of singles, taking the score to 200 by the 41st over.
Mushfiq was a bit nervous in the 90’s and was dropped once by Panyangara. The boundaries were a little hard to come by in the initial stages of the slog overs, as there were 5 men patrolling the boundary. But Shabbir played an astonishing shot over midwicket, and brought up his fifty soon after, off 53 balls. Mushfiqur brought his hundred in the 46th over, taking a single to deep midwicket, off 104 balls.
Once Sabbir was run out, ending a 119 run stand, Mushfiq and Nasir followed suit. Mashrafe hit a couple of lusty blows, and Sunny played a few astonishing shots to take Bangladesh to a competitive score.
