South Africa announce Philander’s replacement for Boxing Day Test
South Africa fast bowler Vernon Philander is set to miss the boxing day Test match against Pakistan due to a fractured finger.
Uncapped Dane Paterson has been added to the squad for the first Test as Philander’s replacement. South Africa will be up against the men in green without their two main seamers. Pacer Lungi Ngidi is also set to miss the series due to an injured knee and a return before February is unlikely to happen.
However, with the likes of Dale Steyn, Kagiso Rabada, and Duanne Olivier, the bowling options still look good for the hosts. Uncapped Paterson is likely behind those three in the pecking order.
Though Paterson is yet to make his debut in the longer format of the game, he has already played three ODIs and eight T20Is for South Africa. The closest he came to playing Test cricket is when he was included in South Africa’s squad as cover against Bangladesh in 2017.
Cricket South Africa’s selection convener, Linda Zondi said –
“We have been looking at him for some time. He is a bowler who has performed on the domestic scene consistently for a long time and he will be our back-up for the first Test.”
The first Test between South Africa and Pakistan will start on December 26 at Centurion.
