Stokes ruled out for 12 weeks
Injured England all-rounder Ben Stokes will be sidelined for up to three months.
Stokes injured his left index finger while taking a catch off Punjab Kings’ Chris Gayle during Rajasthan Royals’ first IPL game of the season. After the match, he was subsequently ruled out of the rest of the IPL.
The 29-year-old will be requiring a surgery that is scheduled on Monday, in Leeds.
“England all-rounder Ben Stokes will be out for up to 12 weeks after a repeat X-ray and CT scan on Thursday revealed that he has a fracture of his left index finger,” England and Wales Cricket Board said in a release.
“Stokes, who is currently in India with Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League, will fly home tomorrow. He will have surgery in Leeds on Monday.”
The injury means Stokes will miss two-match Test series against New Zealand and the white-ball series (three T20Is and ODIs in both) against Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
However, he will be fit before the India series starts where the teams will play five Tests in August-September.
Stokes has been in India since February and had played all of four Tests, five T20Is and three ODIs for England. He was rested for Sri Lanka tour prior to that.
England may also miss the likes Chris Woakes, Sam Curran and Jos Buttler in the first Test against New Zealand, that begins at Lord’s on June 2, due to potential clash with IPL play-offs and quarantine.
