Tamim Iqbal, the player who deserves more
Cricket is a game of mighty uncertainty. Some players become very famous by their skills and some become famous by weird activities. And there are some who remains behind limelight sometimes. They remain unappreciated for long. They can be underappreciated for various issues.
Sometimes they may spend much of their career in the shadows of another great, they may lack the flair of other players, or perhaps the selectors simply don’t give them what they deserve.
There are teams like Bangladesh and Zimbabwe those who have shorter histories as Test-playing nation, they have many players undervalued for different reasons. Although sides still adapting to the international cricket, the players who have tried a lot to make them competitive often fail to receive the praise they would, if they played for a stronger nation like India, Australia.
Bangladesh ODI captain Tamim Iqbal is one of the best batsman in Bangladesh cricket history. Besides he is one of the players in Bangladesh who is much unappreciated prior to his talent. Cricket in Bangladesh has come a long way since Tamim Iqbal’s debut in 2008, and few players have had as big a hand in their growth as Tamim.
Tamim’s contribution to the national team in his Test debut was a mark of respect, he top scored in both Bangladesh’s innings, with 53 and 84. Although New Zealand faced being a fairly weak one, Bangladesh were routed in just three days.
Currently Bangladesh have a side with several well abled players, like Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Mustafizur Rahman. But literally at the time of Tamim’s debut, many of Bangladesh’s players were struggling to prove their potential.
Former Bangladeshi captain Mohammad Ashraful, is a testament to the first match of Tamim Iqbal. Ashraful had a debut Test better than he thought in 2011, scoring a sensational century against a Sri Lankan bowling attack that included Chaminda Vaas and Muttiah Muralitharan is the memorable one he would say.
Although Ashraful’s Test career would end in a cruel way, as he would admit to involvement in spot-fixing, and finish his career with an average of just 24. On the other hand, Tamim Iqbal is currently the country’s all-time leading run scorer of all time.
Tamim perhaps possess quite the same level of talent and ability as like as of Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Mustafizur Rahman, But it’s an irony that he does not receive the same level of admiration of some of his fellow countrymen and outside the country. Though he has made the most of his talent, and consequently he has more Test runs than Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim, although he debuted after them.
Tamim Iqbal holds many records for Bangladesh. For the past three years he has been one of the best three batsmen to score the most as an opener alongside with Rohit Sharma and David Warner. He is the only centurion in shorter form of cricket for Bangladesh. But still Tamim doesn’t get the admiration to the justice level of his talent.
Although he made his name recently during Pakistan Super League (PSL) but it’s hard truth that he deserves more admiration than he gets.
