Temba Bavuma ruled out of T20I opener against Australia
South Africa have been dealt a major blow to their batting department as Temba Bavuma has been ruled out of the team’s T20 series opener against Australia this Friday due to a hamstring strain. Bavuma suffered the injury while fielding against England at SuperSport Park on Sunday and the doctors confirmed that Bavuma needs at least 7 to 10 days rest.
He will stay with the squad and will hope to play the second match in Port Elizabeth on Sunday. However, Cricket South Africa is yet to name the replacement and it is still not clear who will join Quinton de Kock at the top of the batting order.
Faf du Plessis who stepped down from South Africa captaincy across all formats on Monday makes a return to the squad while Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje also make a return.
AB de Villiers, who is set to make a classic comeback at the event is not involved in these matches but could ply his trade for South Africa after the Indian Premier League.
The 35-year-old Faf du Plessis cited that he needed to take a step back from captaincy to make way for the next generation of leaders within the team under Quinton de Kock.
Faf du Plessis led his team in a total of 112 international games across all three formats since December 2012.
Temba Bavuma, who picked up a right hamstring injury during the final T20I match against England, was named in the squad subject to fitness clearance. However, now it has been confirmed that he has been ruled out of the opening encounter.
South Africa will take on Australia for three T20Is on February 21 (Johannesburg), 23 (Port Elizabeth) and 26 (Cape Town).
