Spinners spin Windies to innings defeat
Bangladesh register their first-ever innings victory against Windies and finish the Test series 2-0, courtesy of a brilliant team effort from the batting department and the spinners.
Bangladesh came into the second Test match without a pacer in the line up for the first time in their Test history and in the end, it paid off for the hosts.
Skipper Shakib Al Hasan won the all important toss and elected to bat first without any kind of hesitation. Debutant Shadman Islam showed some serious temperament and went onto score a fifty on his debut. All the batsman chipped in and contributed well with the captain also played a valuable knock of 80 runs.
Liton Das came in his new batting position and played an aggressive knock to score his third Test fifty. But the one, who stood on top among all was Mahmudullah Riyad. The 32-year old scored his 3rd Test hundred, his back to back and it guided Bangladesh in the end to a massive score of 508 runs in their first innings.
Windies struggled right from the word go and lost the wicket of their skipper Kraigg Braithwaite in the very first over, courtesy of a beautiful delivery by the Bangladesh captain. The Caribbeans were in aboslute tatters after losing 5 wickets for only 29 runs. But Shimron Hetmyer (39) saved some humiliation along with Shane Dowrich (37) and crossed the 100-mark.
Except Shakib and Mehidy Hasan, none of the bowlers didn’t have to do much as the duo picked up 10 wickets combined with Mehidy picking seven alone.
Enforcing the follow-on was a no-brainer and Bangladesh did it for the first time in their Test history. Windies lost their skipper in the first over once again. And since then, it was almost a repeat of the first innings as they were 29-4 this time. And it was Hetmyer once again who rescued the Caribbeans from utter humiliation.
A destructive innings from Hetmyer with 9 sixes and only 1 four helped Windies to go past 200. However, he missed his well-deserved hundred for only seven runs.
In the bowling department, it was Mehidy once again who ripped apart Windies with yet another fifer. Taijul Islam chipped in and picked up three wickets with the skipper picking one. And Bangladesh clinched the second Test match by an innings and 184 runs, which is also their first ever Test series victory against Windies at home.
