Zimbabwe win cliffhanger over Afghanistan

Hosts Zimbabwe posted 196 runs in 43 overs after electing to bat first in the most anticipated match of the tournament. Afghanistan made a great start with the ball by taking three wickets for 17 runs.

Craig Ervine departed too after adding on 49 runs with senior statesman Brendan Taylor for the fourth-wicket. Sikandar Raza lifted Zimbabwe with Taylor in a 98-run stand.

Taylor made 88-ball 89 runs hitting 7 fours and 3 sixes. Raza added crucial 60 runs from 68 deliveries including 6 fours and a six. Zimbabwe collapsed once again after these two batsmen’s dismissal.

Afghanistan picked last five wickets for nine runs. Spin duo Mujeeb Zadran and skipper Rashid Khan scalped three wickets each.

In reply, Zimbabwe got early wickets but Rahmat Shah and Mohammad Nabi stood up in a 98-run partnership for the fourth-wicket. Rahmat scored 69 from 91 with 5 fours and a six. Nabi struck 56-ball 51 including 4 boundaries.

Afghanistan collapsed 4/163 to 9/177 as Raza took three wickets in the 37th over including Rahmat and Nabi. That moment turned the game on Zimbabwe’s way. No.9 and no.11 – Dawlat Zadran and Shapoor Zadran – batted for 8.2 overs together.

Both the batsmen were going slow. Afghanistan needed four runs to win in the last over. Dawlat took a single on the second ball to give strike to Shapoor. Brian Vitori got him caught behind on the third ball to seal a two-run victory for Zimbabwe.

Blessing Muzarabani was the pick of the bowlers for his 4 for 47.

Zimbabwe have two wins out of two matches in Group B while Afghanistan have lost both their opening games.
