Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis has counted huge fine for making personal abuse at Australia team mate Kane Richardson during a Big Bash League Twenty20 match.

Stoinis, 30, has able to avoid the suspension but fined $7,500 for the homophobic slur he directed towards Melbourne Renegades batsman Richardson what is termed as a level 2 breach of the CA Code of Conduct for personal abuse. Stoinis pleaded guilty for his action and admitted he was out of line. “I got caught in the moment and took it too far,” Stoinis said.

“I realised immediately I was in the wrong and I apologize to Kane and to the umpires. I did the wrong thing and accept responsibility for my actions. The standards are there for a reason and I accept the penalty,"

he further said.

Stoinis is the top scorer in this year's Big Bash League with 281 runs. Despite that he was dropped from Australia squad for this month's one-day series in India.

It is the second incident during the Australian summer that a cricketer has been charged with abuse. Earlier, James Pattinson was banned from the opening Test of the season for a level-2 homophobic slur. Former Aussie Test opener Simon Katich doubted whether the punishment was precise for the nature of the fault. “I’m not sure a financial punishment is the right way of going about it, given we’ve had a couple of instances of this throughout the summer now,” Katich said on SEN radio. “It’s something they’d be pretty keen to stamp out. I’m not sure a financial penalty in this day and age, when players are very well looked after, is that significant," he added. Meanwhile Cricket Australia’s head of integrity Sean Carroll said, "The behavior in this matter falls short of the standards we expect and we have acted accordingly. There is no place for it in the game.” Stoinis led Melbourne Stars to victory in the particular match hitting an unbeaten 68 from 55 balls.
