Smith does not fit in DC’s playing XI: Gambhir

Steve Smith struggled to score runs for Rajasthan Royals in the previous edition of the Indian Premier League. The franchise decided that it is best to release him ahead of the auction. Australia’s talisman batsman came at a base price of INR 2 crore.

However, there was no intense bidding for the former Aussie captain as he was sold to Delhi Capitals for INR 2.2 crore. The 2020 runners-up in the IPL did a great business in the window by purchasing two good overseas players.

Smith does not fit in playing XI: Gambhir

Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has recently analyzed Delhi Capitals’ squad after they purchased the players in the auction. Gambhir was of the notion that Steve Smith does not fit in Delhi Capitals’ playing XI in the first place.

The former Indian opener justified his claim by adding that Capitals already have enough foreign resources in their unit, which means it would be really tough for Smith to break into the straight XI.

Gambhir further spoke about the team selection and Smith’s role while speaking to Star Sports. He said: “Without a doubt, Steve Smith does not fit into the Delhi Capitals playing XI. They are probably too heavy at the top of the batting order.

They will not know where to put him. They have got Shikhar Dhawan, who was in very good form the last term. To add to that, they have Prithvi Shaw, Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer, and Rishabh Pant.”

“They will definitely play Shimron Hetmyer in the middle order. Further, Marcus Stoinis, Anrich Nortje, and Rabada did really really well for them too. Now they have got Chris Woakes as well. So, I do not really see him actually in the playing XI,” he added.
